The goal of the art curriculum is to expose our students to aesthetic experiences that encompass mind, body, and emotions. We recognize that the visual arts teach self-discipline, reinforce self-esteem, and foster the thinking skills and creativity so valued in the workplace. In accordance with our religious beliefs, we teach students to regard creativity as a God-given gift that should be developed fully.
Each class has one period per week devoted to art, but art is also frequently integrated into other areas of the curriculum and includes field trips to art galleries and museums. In grades kindergarten to four, our young children experiment enthusiastically with different materials. In grades five through eight, students study art history to develop knowledge and appreciation of great works of art. Concurrently, they work with a variety of materials to develop more formal skills with which to express their emotions and their perceptions of the world around them. An Art Show is held in the Spring of each year, celebrating the talents of our students.
