Math
We believe that in order to be prepared for twenty-first century living, our students must become mathematical problem solvers.  Hence, approximately 15-20% of classroom instruction at all grade levels is devoted to mathematics.  The curriculum is taught sequentially, beginning with concrete exploration and leading to the understanding of mathematical symbols.  Geometry, measurement, probability and statistics are introduced in the early grades in addition to essential computation skills, which are drilled until mastery is achieved.  Manipulatives are used where appropriate, and computer software is available for enrichment and remediation.  As they move through the grades, students use their basic skills to problem solve, communicate, and reason mathematically and also to make mathematical connections.
In the upper grades, emphasis moves from the concrete to the abstract.  We offer two sections of algebra to qualified eighth graders and pre-algebra to seventh and the remaining eighth graders.  Students use calculators where appropriate and computer software such as Excel and Access for a variety of applications including integration with science and social studies.
