In our science program, we strive for the growth of scientific literacy in the context of Catholic faith and tradition. We believe that, as citizens of the twenty-first century, our students must possess the knowledge and skills necessary for living in a technological environment. Furthermore, we recognize that they will need the ability to make informed, ethical decisions on ecological and biological issues. To fulfill our goals, earth, life, and physical science are taught progressively at every grade level. Teaching techniques include labs, experiments, dissections, hands-on group activities, essay writing, and PowerPoint presentations incorporating scientific software and the Internet. Also, science-related field trips are included each year. Students progressively learn to integrate technology, math, and language arts skills with their understanding of the scientific method. They become proficient at Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. The culmination of our program is the required eighth grade Science Fair. This challenging project demonstrates students’ research, technology, language arts, and math skills in addition to scientific content. Students and parents find this experience exciting and enjoyable as well as excellent preparation for high school. As an extra-curricular activity, middle grade students may choose to participate in the Science Olympiad at St. Mark’s High School, where they have been successful for several years.
