Our social studies curriculum seeks to create an awareness of our diverse nation and the interdependent world. We teach the concepts and skills necessary for understanding historical, economic, geographic, social, political, and cultural events within the framework of Catholic moral principles. The ultimate goal of the curriculum is to enable students to learn about the past and better understand the present in order to prepare for the future. To fulfill this last objective, we aim to teach our students democratic citizenship and the importance of fully participating in our constitutional system of government. Students develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions in order to become active in the promotion of peace and justice in our country and the world. A thematic approach addresses the core content that emphasizes the history and geography of Delaware, the United States, and the study of ancient World Cultures. In addition, curriculum units involving hands-on projects, field trips, language arts activities and involvement with other basic subjects, teach an appreciation of the connections between social studies and the rest of the curriculum. Teachers use many techniques including the use of Internet sites, PowerPoint presentations, movies, and dramatic re-enactments to enhance motivation and reach students with different learning styles.
