Girls on the Run was founded by Molly Barker in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1996. A long-time runner Molly Barker began running at the age of 15. She developed the curriculum for Girls on the Run to create an environment where young girls did not have to fit in the "girl box." Girls on the Run is now in over 135 cities across North America.
Girls on the Run is a program for our 3rd to 5th graders that combines training for a 3.1 mile (5K) running event with self-esteem building workouts. The goals of the program are to encourage positive emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical development.
The program is a 10 week character building program that teaches personal and social skills through running. At the end of the program, the team runs in a non-competitive 5K event. This gives the girls a sense of accomplishment. The program gives the girls a stronger sense of identity and a healthier body image.
